If you want to store documents in the database, you need to provide the users with a way to upload the documents. Fortunately, APEX provides a standard way of doing this, which you can easily incorporate into your applications. However, this ease of use comes with a few limitations, as we will discuss in the Issues with the Standard Procedures section later in this chapter. To demonstrate how to use the standard upload procedure in APEX, we will extend the Buglist application to enable users to also upload a file with a bug entry. This file could actually contain anything, but for the purposes of this example, we will assume that it will contain a screenshot of the bug to help track it down.

As the name implies, this means that when you enter your query and click the Apply button in the Application Builder, your query will be validated (checked to ensure it is syntactically correct and so on). Alternatively, if you select the Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only) option, the query will not be validated within the Application Builder when you hit the Apply button. Instead, it will be parsed at runtime, and you will not be forewarned if you ve made a mistake in the query (such as incorrectly naming a column or table). However, the difference between using named columns (as we ll refer to query-specific column names) and generic columns runs much deeper than just whether they are parsed and validated at design time. Both types serve a specific purpose, so one type may be more applicable to a particular situation than the other.

Plug-in Studio If you really want to improve your iManager experience, you can use Plug-in Studio. Plug-in Studio lets you create custom tasks and property books. In creating these custom tasks, you can use all available classes that exist in eDirectory. It s even possible to work with Auxiliary classes to create your own tasks. You can activate Plug-in Studio by choosing iManager Configure Role Based Services Plug-in Studio. This displays the screen shown in Figure 7-17.
