In Flex, you can build custom component libraries that you can use across multiple projects and share with other developers. Flex library projects are an integral part of creating reusable components. Using them is a good way to reduce the amount of work you need to do in the future as you grow your code repositories. A library generates a SWC file, instead of a SWF file like a regular Flex project. You can use the libraries in a few different ways in your projects: Integrated with the Flex application: You can drop a SWC library into the Flex project s libs directory to get access to the components. Once you drop the SWC into the directory, Flex will pick up on the change and integrate the library into your project. Then you will have access to the components in the library SWC. This approach compiles the library SWC into the Flex project s SWF, thus increasing the size of your SWF. This is the most convenient and common way to use library components. Externalized library: Externalizing the library from the Flex project will keep the SWC from being compiled into the SWF. Use this approach if you need to cut down on your SWF size. The components of the SWC are loaded into memory when needed at runtime. Runtime shared library (RSL): RSLs are similar to dynamically linked libraries (DLLs) in Windows and are available only in Flex projects. You will want to investigate this solution if you have multiple applications that need to share components of a Flex library. Again, these components are loaded only when needed and are loaded into memory once. They are cached and shared across all applications that need to use that component.

To complete our custom component example, we will move CustomDateChooser and RoundedGradientBorder to a Flex library. The first thing we need to do here is create a new Flex library project to hold our custom ActionScript components. In Eclipse, select File New Flex Library Project. Give it a project name, as shown in Figure 4-12, and then click the Finish button. (You don t need the AIR libraries unless you are building an AIR application, which we are not doing in this example.)

Take the com directory from the Flex project and move it to the Flex Library project. Then select the elements you want compiled into the SWC. Open the project properties by right-clicking the project and selecting Properties, or by selecting Project Properties. Open the Classes tab under the Flex Library Build Path, and check the top-level check box on com, as shown in Figure 4-13.
