If you only need to view the document or print it, this mode will not restrict these actions. However, if you really must edit the document, click the Notify button. This option tells SharePoint to notify you when the document becomes available. While waiting, leave the copy of Word open, although it does not have to be the active window (you can minimize it). When the other user closes and checks in the document, a pop-up dialog box appears as shown in Figure 4-8, notifying you that you can check out the current version to edit it.

Now that you have a picture library, you probably want to save pictures to it. Accessing the Upload menu of the open picture library shows that you have two options for uploading pictures: one for uploading individual images and one for uploading multiple images. While you can navigate to the folder where you want to upload your images before beginning to upload, you can select the picture folder from within the Select Picture dialog. In reality, you can select either option because even the Upload Picture option allows you to upload multiple images, and the Upload Multiple Pictures option does not fail if you only select a single image to upload. If you checked out the document, you must also check it back in. Otherwise, it remains checked out to you. This feature supports working on documents offline while periodically updating your changes back to SharePoint. It should not be used so you can keep the document permanently checked out. Each of the previous examples involve opening, editing, and resaving documents that already exist in SharePoint. But suppose you want to create a new document and save it. Again, I will demonstrate using Microsoft Office Word as the application tool, but remember that techniques that apply to one Office product typically apply to others as well.

Caution This feature may not be available to users who are attempting to access their site directly from the server on which they have installed SharePoint. The easy solution is to access your site/server from another networked machine.
