Please note that not all PIOs translate to a disk read, as many of them can be satisfied from the operating system s internal buffer cache, but from Oracle s point of view they are all disk reads or PIOs. Although it may seem counterintuitive, in general, your goal should be to focus on reducing LIOs rather than PIOs, for the following reasons: Typically, LIOs require use of latches and/or serialization devices, which can have a seriously negative impact on the scalability of the system. If you reduce LIOs, PIOs take care of themselves naturally because most PIOs are preceded by LIO calls in the first place.
