The first of these is multimode fiber, which arrived in a variety of different forms. Multimode fiber bears that name because it enables more than a single mode or ray of light to be carried through the fiber simultaneously because of the relatively wide core diameter that characterizes the fiber. Although the dispersion that potentially results from this phenomenon can be a problem, multimode fiber has its advantages. For one thing, it is far easier to couple the relatively wide and forgiving end of a multimode fiber to a light source than that of the much narrower single-mode fiber. It is also significantly less expensive to manufacture (and purchase) and relies on LEDs and inexpensive receivers rather than the more expensive laser diodes and ultra-sensitive receiver devices. However, advancements in technology have caused the use of multimode fiber to fall out of favor; single-mode is far more commonly used today. Multimode fiber is manufactured in two forms: step-index fiber and graded-index fiber. We will examine each in turn. Multimode Step-Index Fiber In step-index fiber, the index of refraction of the core is slightly higher than the index of refraction of the cladding. Remember that the higher the refractive index, the slower the signal travels through the medium. Thus, in step-index fiber, any light that escapes into the cladding because it enters the core at too oblique an angle will actually travel slightly faster in the cladding (assuming it does not escape altogether) than it would if it traveled in the core. One of the earliest diodes, existing even before vacuum tubes, was a semiconductor. Known as a cat whisker, this semiconductor consisted of a fine piece of wire in contact with a small piece of the mineral galena. This bizarre-looking thing had the ability to act as a rectifier for small radio-frequency (RF) currents. A cat whisker was a finicky thing. Engineers had to adjust the position of the fine wire to find the best point of contact with the galena. A tweezers and magnifying glass were invaluable in this process. A steady hand was essential. The galena, sometimes called a crystal, gave rise to the nickname crystal set for this low-sensitivity radio. You can still build a crystal set today, using a simple RF diode, a coil, a tuning capacitor, a headset, and a long-wire antenna. Notice that there s no battery! The audio is provided by the received signal alone.

372 Some uses of diodes The diode in Fig. 20-2 acts to recover the audio from the radio signal. This is called detection; the circuit is a detector. If the detector is to be effective, the diode must be of the right type. It should have low capacitance, so that it works as a rectifier at radio frequencies, passing current in one direction but not in the other. Some modern RF diodes are actually microscopic versions of the old cat whisker, enclosed in a glass case with axial leads. You have probably seen these in electronics hobby stores. Details about detector circuits are discussed in chapter 27. Some detectors use diodes; others do not. Modulation methods are examined in chapter 26.
