If you are introducing new EJBs into your existing application, note that there are some limitations on how legacy entity beans interact with JPA entities, so writing new EJBs to interact with legacy EJBs can present problems. The changes introduced in EJB 3 greatly reduce application maintenance costs and for a living, evolving application, it is likely that savings in source code maintenance, reliability, and even performance will overshadow the costs of the migration process itself. In any case, understanding the details of the transformation process is a requirement of evaluating the costs and benefits of an application migration project. This chapter is all about how to transform your legacy source code into EJB 3 source so that you can take advantage of the benefits just outlined. While we will suggest options for you to consider once you have migrated your code to EJB 3, in general we will not delve into discussions of the many new features in EJB 3 that are not present in EJB 2.1, unless they are directly relevant to the migration process. Client applications can either be installed on the desktop machine or downloaded from a server using technologies like Java Web Start. In this architecture, there will always be a remote invocation of the session beans from the client applications, as the session beans will be running on a remote server. This architecture is able to leverage the benefits of session beans, as is the case with web applications. The upside of this programming model is that you can run your applications in a standard Java SE environment without using an EJB container, but the obvious downside is that you will lose the services provided by the EJB container.
