In this chapter, we have presented The Grinder, a methodology to conduct performance tests, and a toolkit to generate the load for the performance tests. We went through an example of a performance test that used the methodology and the toolkit. In particular, we discussed performance criteria, with a review of the two performance indicators: response time and throughput. We covered the simulation of application usage, with a discussion about test scripts and think times. We also covered the defining of test metrics such as number of users, sample size, and exclusion of data as well as how to determine the accuracy of the performance test. To illustrate the use of this methodology, we presented a detailed case study using the application we created in the previous chapters and compared two inheritance strategies. In the next chapter, we will look into how you can migrate existing EJB applications that were developed with earlier versions of the specification to EJB 3.
